That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and urgent: since Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour. As these characters’ stories build and build and converge, they astonish. For while this heartbreaking and magical book entertains and is at once about family, love of parents and children, art and money, it’s also about the nation’s reckoning with a tragic police shooting playing over and over again on the news. And with what it can mean to be Black in America. Who has been killed? Who is The Kid? Will the author finish his book tour, and what kind of world will he leave behind?  Unforgettably told, with characters who burn into your mind and an electrifying plot ideal for book club discussion, Hell of a Book is the novel Mott has been writing in his head for the last ten years. And in its final twists it truly becomes its title.

Book Hell of a Book: A Novel Review :

A Hell of a Book is about an author who has written a novel called A Hell of a Book and is on a tour to tell the media what A Hell of a Book is about. It is also about none of that.It is about being Black in America. And while it is impossible for a white person to ever know what it’s like to be Black in America, I imagine that reading this book is about as close as they could come. And while Black people, of course, do know what it’s like to be Black in America, this novel might put them in touch with a reality they weren’t even aware they were living in.A Hell of a Book is fantastical without being fantasy; literary without being stiff; message-bearing without being preachy. It is a thoroughly entertaining novel that could not be more timely.
I don't know what even kept me reading the whole book. Probably because it was Jenna's book of the month pick for July. Throughout it was hard to keep up with his constantly switching from reality to the voices in his head. Was even one sentence in the book real or was every sentence the voices in his head? Who knows!Seriously the strangest book I've ever readSorry I wasn't able to give it a better review.
